Thousands of people turned out on Saturday 11 October to celebrate the official opening of Leeds’ newest urban fashion quarter, Clarence Dock. Hosted by Gok Wan, Channel 4′s fashion guru who was recently voted into the top 5 of London’s most influential fashion personalities, the crowds were wowed by a spectacular fashion extravaganza.A floating catwalk in the dock was the centre piece of the event with an unusual and cutting edge fashion and dance combination showcasing collections from All Saints, Daniel Footwear, Emma by Emma Somerset, G-Star, JOY, Moda in Pelle, Replay and Rock Couture. Cutting edge Leeds hair and beauty salon RMUK were brought in to style the model’s hair whilst the make-up was created by Bobbi Brown from House of Fraser beauty counter.
At Rock Couture, Retail Director Gillian Bowler, said: “It was fantastic – we haven’t seen anything like that since the first day of the Harrods sale! The range of customers was brilliant, we had women ranging from 14 to 40 plus, and they were there for the fashion element. The Rock & Republic jeans were flying out of the store.” Store manager Hannah Whipp confirmed: “It was a brilliant day – we were busy, not only on the Saturday, but all weekend. It’s such a beautiful place to shop.”
Simon Kidd, Commercial Lettings Director at Clarence Dock, said: “Despite the harsh market the advantages are that the brands here will attract our core customers which are young people. The young singles, young couples, with disposable incomes; they are not held back by family commitments, big mortgages or having to fuel cars.”
Mary Benson, a graduate fashion student from Leeds who appeared on Mary Portas’s television show ‘Mary Queen of Shops’ this summer, said: “This is the best fashion show I have ever been too – it was really good”.
