Why allergy testing is so important

Reactions of one kind or another to the use of hair dye products are not that uncommon. They range from irritation occurring locally in areas in direct contact with the dye, to genuine allergy which will provoke local symptoms but may also produce a systemic reaction affecting other areas of the body.

In both cases the symptoms can vary from very mild to quite severe.

To avoid unnecessary reactions, RMUK offer a simple, easy to use skin allergy test that is standard within the professional hairdressing industry and is used to help indicate if the client is likely to have a problem with the hair dye.

Clients are allergy tested 48 hours before every colouring treatment to ensure there are no bad reactions; the records are then kept for future reference.

The allergy test involves applying a small amount of the prepared dye to an area of skin in an out of the way place. Most frequently, the skin behind the ear or on the inside of the arm at the elbow is used as this skin is relatively thin and sensitive. During the allergy test the area of skin used should be left untouched and uncovered during the 48 hour duration of test.

If redness, burning, itching, pain, or blisters and eruptions develop at or near the site of application during the two day test it means you are sensitive to the dye and you should not use it.

RMUK will not colour a client’s hair without an allergy test beforehand, this is to ensure the safety of the client.

Niamh Murphy joins the L’Oreal Professionnel team

Friday, July 24th, 2009

Niamh Murphy from the RMUK salon in Leeds joined the L’Oreal Professionnel team of talented young hairdressers to style the hair for the prestigious BA (Hons) Graduate Fashion Show 2009.

In 2001 L’Oreal Professionnel and the world famous Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design forged an exciting partnership to nurture cutting edge talent. The aim was to recognise and promote the way hair and fashion have been historically linked and to combine up and coming creative fashion talent with the hairdressing stars of tomorrow.

The L’Oreal Professionnel Portfolio team is made up of young hairdressers from around the country.

Vincent Mercier, Managing Director of L’Oreal Professionnel Products Division sums up the collaboration. “Hairstyles and hair colour say as much about you as the clothes you wear, therefore it is not only tremendously exciting, but absolutely vital for L’Oréal Professionnel to forge a relationship with one of the most important fashion schools in the world. This ongoing partnership merges the very latest in fashion talent with the creativity of young hairdressers - it is a unique and inspired collaboration”.

This view is echoed by Willie Walters, Course Director of BA Fashion at Central Saint Martins. “The free flow of ideas and creative energy is central to both industries. This collaboration is groundbreaking.”

This year’s panel of judges was designer Gareth Pugh, Vogue Fashion Features Director Harriet Quick, Sarah Mower from Style.com, designer Mark Fast and Paul Edmonds, celebrity hairstylist. Caryn Franklin hosted the prize giving presentations.

Designer Mark Fast presented 3rd prize to Dean Quinn (Womens wear)
Designer Peter Jensen presented 2nd prize to Luke Brooks (Fashion knitwear)
Monica Teodoro, Marketing Manager L’Oreal Professionnel UK & Ireland presented 1st Prize, the L’Oreal Professionnel Young Designer of the Year Award, to Marie Hill (Fashion Print).
